Citizen's Police Academy

The St. Joseph Police and Buchanan County Sheriff's Office present an eight-week academy that is both informative and fun, offering a new understanding of our departments' day-to-day operations. The instructors will be certified Law Enforcement Officers from both the City and County.
This program is NOT a candidate school. It gives participants a general, hands-on look at how the two Departments operate. This program is not a forum to debate past enforcement contacts or personal grievances. Citizens are welcome to join discussions and learn from each other.
Class size is limited to thirty people. Applicants must be Buchanan County residents, at least eighteen years old, and pass a background investigation. Commitment to one night a week for eight weeks and a Patrol Division Ride Along is required. All eight classes must be completed to graduate. Apply quickly if interested.
Each participant receives a diploma at a graduation ceremony led by Chief of Police Paul Luster and Sheriff Bill Puett upon finishing the course.
The Citizen's Academy starts taking applications in January of each year, and classes start in March. To submit your application for the next class, use the online application below or pick up a paper application in the Police Department lobby, 501 Faraon Street.
